Marijuana-themed sub restaurant Cheba Hut plans to open its second Milwaukee location Feb. 12 at 2022 S Kinnickinnic Ave., in Bay View.

The new site is on the first floor of Vue apartments. Milwaukee's first Cheba Hut "joint" opened on North Oakland Avenue, near the UW-Milwaukee campus, in 2021.

"We're heavily supported by the community at UWM. We feel like we've had a nice meld with the community there, and we feel that Cheba Hut in Bay View is a good fit," said Heather Huhn, co-owner of Cheba Hut.

Huhn said that their subs speak for themselves, and they will bring the same weed-strain named sandwiches to Bay View, including the White Widow, which is chicken, bacon, ranch, mushrooms, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and house dressing;, and Sensi Kush, with bacon, honey siracha, mayo, avocado, provolone, lettuce, tomato and house dressing.

Subs specific to the Bay View location are the Grape Ape, with meatballs, bacon, barbecue, jalapeno cream cheese, onion, jalapeno and cheddar; and the Deathstar, with turkey breast, genoa salami, bacon, jalapeno cream cheese, jalapeno, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and house dressing.

Despite the tongue-in-cheek theme, none of the products include any actual marijuana.

Sandwiches are $6.49 for a 4 inch "nug," $10.39 for a 8 inch "pinner" and $13.59 for a 12 inch "blunt."

Music-themed artwork is found inside Milwaukee's new Cheba Hut in Bay View.

The space is filled with music-themed artwork, and has a large mural within the building.

Huhn said in expanding to Bay View, they are upgrading their tea and tapped beer options for what she anticipates will be an older customer base compared to Oakland Avenue's mostly college student customer base.

"We've always considered ourselves a family place. We have highchairs available, which doesn't get used much on Oakland. We think those will be used more in Bay View," Huhn said.

At both locations, they are expanding their catering options for business lunches or other uses.

"Bay View is walkable, there are a lot of businesses expanding in the area, and I love the vibe Bay View has too," Huhn said. "We're excited to expand to that part of the city."

Cheba Hut was started by a former Arizona State University student who saw a need for late-night food delivery, especially one that catered to college-aged students. Today, there are over 43 shops in 14 states.

Cheba Hut Bay View's regular hours will be Sunday through Wednesday 10 a.m. through midnight; and Thursday through Saturday 10 to 2 a.m.

The Bay View restaurant plans a grand opening on March 18.
