REARDAN – Saint George's maintained its hold on second place in the NE2B league with a 38-23 win over the Screaming Eagles Saturday, Jan. 28.
The Dragons showed their shooting prowess early in the game with a pair of 3-point baskets by Kalea Schlenker and Margreit Galow and five points from Annika Bergquist. At the end of the first quarter, Saint George's led the Screaming Eagles 13-4.
In the second quarter Bergquist and Galow each scored four points as the Dragons extended their halftime lead to 23-9. Eighth grader Tenice Waters tried to keep Reardan in the game with her frenetic play, scoring six of her team's nine first half points.
In the third quarter Waters scored six points for Reardan, as did Galow for the Dragons, whose marksmanship was on display with a pair of treys. When the buzzer sounded, Saint George's was ahead 36-17.
In the final stanza, the Dragons scored only two points, but it didn't matter as Reardan's offense produced only six. Saint George's won the game 38-23.
Bergquist led all scorers with 14 points and hauled in 13 rebounds. Galow contributed 13 points.
"It's always fun playing Reardan," Galow said. "Reardan's defense is unstoppable. They made us work on every possession. Considering we didn't have two of our starters, I thought our team chemistry was very good."
Waters scored 13 of Reardan's 23 points, followed by Liz Bell and Liberty Anderson with five and four points, respectively. Emma Flaa led the Screaming Eagles in rebounds with 10. Waters hauled in six and Anderson five.
"The game tonight was disappointing," Flaa said. "There was a big turnout but as a team we got nervous and didn't play our hardest. Against Chewelah next week, we are going to take care of business."
Reardan made only 19% of their shot attempts compared to Saint George's who converted 35%. The Screaming Eagles won the rebound battle 36-33.
"Anytime you play Swannack, you know you're in for a battle on the offensive end," Saint George's head coach Brad Kirsch said. "It's always a battle with them. I was really pleased with Margreit (Galow) tonight. She hit shots early and was a big-time defensive force."
Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said playing back-to-back games, and three in one week, took a toll on his team.
"I don't think we showed up to compete tonight," Swannack said. "The kids were focused on Senior Night and had a difficult time refocusing on the task at hand. I also think the girls were gassed from playing three games this week. I think against Chewelah next week, we'll be more focused. Our seniors are running out of daylight here and need to turn it on."
With the win, Saint George's improved to 13-2 in league play. The loss dropped Reardan to 6-8.
The Screaming Eagles were locked into the No. 4 seed out of the NE2B North Division with the loss and will begin District 7 tournament play in a loser-out game against Chewelah at West Valley High School at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.
