Trayce Thompson News: Dodgers Outfielder Reportedly Joining WBC Team

Add another Dodgers player to the lengthy list of World Baseball Classic participants. This time, it’s outfielder Trayce Thompson, who will be representing Team Great Britain in the 2023 WBC.

Thompson is eligible for the British team because his father, former Lakers forward Mychal Thompson, is from the Bahamas. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas has been governmentally independent since 1973, but it still recognized England’s King Charles III as its monarch and retains its ties to Great Britain.

Trayce will be competing for a starting job with Los Angeles in spring training, but he’ll be away from the team for some stretches for WBC action. Great Britain is in Pool C, which plays its opening-round games in Phoenix, so his travel will be minimized. The other teams in Pool C are the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Colombia, with the top two teams in the pool advancing to the quarterfinals in Miami, so there’s a decent chance Thompson will never have to leave Arizona for his WBC experience.

Thompson is the only current MLB player on the GB roster. Former big leaguers Chris Reed, Akeel Morris, Michael Roth, and Vance Worley are on the team, along with a few current prospects including Mariners catcher Harry Ford.

This will be Thompson’s first time representing Great Britain in international play.
