Cary Vaughn, chair of the Shelby County Republican Party, told “Wake Up Memphis” is it crucial for Memphis city leaders to support local law enforcement, especially after a police officer was shot Thursday.

Vaughn says officers not having the support from the public and elected officials can also be a deterrent for those considering to serve and protect.

“If you’re a young 25-year-old, would you ever think about joining the police department or the sheriff’s department?” he asked host Ben Deeter. “Who wants to go into a job situation or a career path where you’ve already started out with a negative?”

Vaughn believes progress in Memphis starts with city leaders stepping up by uniting, keeping law enforcement accountable when they make mistakes but also backing them up financially and overall.

“It’s just rhetoric, it’s campaign talk, it’s what’s good for one side,” he said. “What we have to do is cut through the smoke as a city, band together as leaders and figure out a way that heals this community.”
