A Bakersfield man was found guilty of attempted murder for a 2021 shooting in Oxnard.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, on August 28, 2021, 32-year-old Raymond Reyes a known gang member, fired four rounds toward the victim along South M Street near West Poplar Street in Oxnard.

One of the bullets hit the victim in the back and another went into a nearby residence. The victim, who was not a documented gang member, suffered extensive injuries from his wounds, according to the DA’s office.

Reyes was arrested by the Oxnard Police Department Violent Crimes Unit on September 20, 2021.

The jury found Reyes guilty of four counts related to the shooting: attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and being a felon in possession of ammunition. The jury also found Reyes guilty of graffiti vandalism, a charge stemming from his actions while in custody for the shooting.

The jury found that the five crimes were committed for the benefit of a gang and that during the shooting he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to a release.

The DA’s office said Reyes also had a prior strike conviction for a 2011 carjacking in Kern County.

“The verdict in this case shows gang-related crimes will not be tolerated in Ventura County and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Deputy District Attorney Hayley Moyer, a member of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Major Crimes-Gang Unit, who prosecuted the case to its conclusion on February 1, 2023.

Reyes is scheduled to be sentenced on April 13, 2023, at the Ventura County Superior Court. He is facing a maximum exposure of 105 years to life in prison.
