The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recovered $7.3 million in stolen vehicles and parts in 2022.

The DMV recovered 231 stolen vehicles valued at more than $7.3 million and 81 stolen vehicle parts, worth $67,223.

By comparison, in 2021, the DMV recovered 194 vehicles and 77 parts for a total value of $5.2 million.

The most-recovered stolen vehicles in the state were Hondas, at 76 vehicles totaling just over $2 million. The second-most-recovered stolen vehicles were Jeeps at 23, with Dodges and Toyotas tying for third at 15 each.

At the governor's direction, the DMV has also worked with members of law enforcement, the National Insurance Crime Bureau and state and regional automobile dealers' associations to combat catalytic converter thefts as well.

The increase in stolen vehicles in the state exemplifies the nationwide surge in vehicle theft, leading major insurance companies to refuse covering certain models by Kia and Hyundai due to the lack of anti-theft protection.
