The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office has detained the driver accused of fatally striking a pedestrian north of McCutchanville Thursday evening.

Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear identified the victim as 62-year-old Faith R. Georges. Investigators are waiting to review autopsy and toxicology reports before they attribute a cause and manner of death, Lockyear said.

Sheriff Noah Robinson told the Courier & Press Friday afternoon the driver who reportedly struck Georges is now "in custody," but that they had "not yet been booked into the jail."

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office will release additional information soon, Robinson said.

Scott Township Fire Department personnel reportedly located Georges in the 11000 block of Sawmill Drive around 6:10 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release. Deputies were called out to the area to perform a medical assist when they encountered Georges, who was by that point in need of immediate medical attention.

"(Georges) sustained serious bodily injuries as a result of the crash," a VCSO spokesman wrote. "The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was operating a Chevrolet van and struck the pedestrian with their vehicle."

According to the sheriff's office, Georges was taken from the scene to a local hospital, where she later died.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
