With temperatures dipping across Central New York, the Onondaga County Water Authority recommends homeowners take precautions to prevent their pipes from freezing.

Officials said homeowners who have a basement should make sure there's no outside air blowing on the pipes. They said fitting pipes with extra insulation or opening cabinets to help circulate the air can also help avoid freezing pipes.

They say to let water drip from the faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, but if you have water supply inside the garage, make sure the doors are closed.

"There's always the possibility that pipes could burst and that you all have water running in the street that's freezing. Be very cautious if you see water spraying up, water running flowing into the street. It could be icy and very dangerous," said Jeff Brown, OWCA's executive director.

If you're going away, try to leave the heat on at a temperature no lower than 55 degrees.
