DENVER (KDVR) — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Speer Boulevard Thursday night.

According to the Denver Police Department, officers were investigating a hit-and-run crash in the area of 11th and Speer. The area is in the Lincoln Park neighborhood near the Sunken Gardens Park.

The driver, identified as 18-year-old Martin Martinez, was driving northbound on Speer at 10:15 p.m. and going 30 mph when he allegedly struck the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was using the crosswalk at Speer and 11th when they were struck and sustained serious injuries.

Friday morning, DPD provided an update that the man had died at the hospital from his injuries.

According to DPD, Martinez continued to drive before parking his car a few blocks away from the crash. He didn’t check or render aid to the victim.

Martinez returned to where his vehicle was parked sometime later and approached the officers investigating the crash. He did not possess a valid driver’s license. Martinez was cited for careless driving resulting in death, driving without a license and careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury to a vulnerable road user.
