NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — New Haven police are investigating a shooting that took place on Howard Avenue and left one man in critical condition Friday morning.

Officers responded to the incident around 2 a.m. near the 600 block of Howard Avenue. Police received a ShotSpotter activation stating that several rounds had been fired and a person was shot.

At the scene, investigators found a 44-year-old New Haven resident who had been shot multiple times. The victim was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where police said he is in critical condition.

While the shooting investigation was underway, additional officers in the area said they observed a large crowd gathering near a library. A suspect took off from the scene, running towards Daggett Street.

Officers said they chased the suspect through multiple yards and over fences. They caught up to him in a backyard, where he was searched and police found a gun in his coat pocket.

Police arrested the suspect for possession of a firearm. However, officials stated that a connection between the suspect and the shooting has not been made.

Detectives from the New Haven Police Department are in the area searching for witnesses and video surveillance.
