PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An armed man has barricaded themselves in a barn after a shooting, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials tell KOIN 6 News there was a family disturbance at NE Gable Ave & NE 359th St. and shots were fired by the individual when deputies arrived.

CCSO said the 911 caller claimed the man had assaulted an elderly family member by punching him in the facing, knocking him to the ground. The caller said the perpetrator was drunk and possibly suicidal.

Deputies had been out to this residence the previous day to respond to a minor disturbance. The same man was allegedly armed in the basement, but the family didn’t feel like he was a danger, so law enforcement left the area.

While speaking with family members outside the house, CCSO says the suspect fired a round from a revolver-style handgun after coming out of a barn on the property. Deputies got a pair of family members to safety, then went inside the main residence to get the elderly man evacuated.

According to officials, deputies contacted the residence and launched an Unmanned Aircraft System team that located the suspect standing outside the barn before he shot off another round and went back in the barn.

A SWAT Team was activated due to the shots fired and a search warrant and granted by a judge to enter the barn to arrest the suspect.

The suspect was able to exit the barn and break the containment set up by law enforcement, moving into a wooded area where he tried to hide in some brush on the property. However, he eventually surrendered to SWAT operators and was arrested without incident, officials said.

David D. McCandless, 57, was booked in the Clark County Jail and charged with assault (domestic violence) and reckless endangerment.
