When she learned no one had come forward to claim Cannon's remains, she knew something had to be done. In the process, she said she gained something invaluable — a family member.

"I thought, 'No, this is not right,'" Stanley said. "And I knew I had to reach out and tell them that I would love to claim her. She could be my godmom. I will be her goddaughter, but she has to be remembered and honored."

While helping out the other fire victims, Stanley got to learn more about the woman she planned on helping.

"She was in the Army on top of it all," Stanley said. "She served our country, so the least I could do is step up and do the right thing and give her a decent memorial service and funeral."

Stanley reached out to the Monroe County Veterans Services Agency to see what could be done for Cannon.

The VSA released a statement.

Christine Cannon served in the US Army and was honorably discharged from service. The VSA is currently working to ensure the Veterans Administration delivers the benefits that Ms. Cannon has earned. Ms. Cannon qualifies to be buried in a military cemetery. The VSA is also working with 'Van Stanley who is doing Ms. Cannon’s Memorial.

Stanley said community members have been coming into the restaurant from all over to donate and help her make sure Cannon has a proper burial.

"I wanted her parents to know," Cannon said. "I know they are smiling down. I have your daughter, and I will make sure that I take great care of her. So don't worry about Christine Cannon. She is in great hands."

Stanley is inviting the public to attend Cannon's funeral, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. at the Power House Kingdom Cathedral Church of God In Christ on Clifton Street.
