Quick moving storm heading to the region and Lake Tahoe this weekend

Update: A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday. A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Saturday at 7 pm to Sunday at 10 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A weak system is expected to push through northeast California Thursday night into Friday. Southwest winds will begin to increase Thursday afternoon in the higher terrain, peaking early Friday morning. Ridgetop gusts of 70 to 100 mph could result in some aviation and mountain recreation disruptions. Winds will begin to diminish Friday afternoon.

Light snow showers will move into the Sierra on Friday. While accumulations are expected to be minimal, we may see up to 2 inches along the crest and a dusting down into the Tahoe Basin. Even light accumulations on the roadway can create slick and hazardous conditions. Download Caltrans Quickmap app on your smartphone to get the latest roadway conditions before heading over the passes on Friday.

A second, stronger system is still expected to move into the Sierra Saturday night through Sunday. This winter storm will bring more widespread snow and wind impacts to northeast California, so stay tuned to the latest forecast.
