Haven’t received your mail the last few days? Here’s why.

IDAHO FALLS — Have you looked into your mailbox the last few days and noticed it’s empty? There’s a reason for that.

EastIdahoNews.com received several messages about mail not showing up in Idaho Falls this week. People have gone to social media and asked, “Did the post office not deliver in some neighborhoods?”

Severe weather conditions in Idaho Falls, including measurable snow and dangerously cold temperatures, have impacted mail service. According to USPS spokeswoman Kim Frum, the postal service had to make adjustments to schedules, and that means not everyone has received mail as expected.

“All impacted mail should be delivered by the end of the week,” Frum said in an email to EastIdahoNews.com on Wednesday. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers, and we appreciate their understanding.”

She said carriers deliver the mail in all kinds of weather and the safety of USPS employees is a top priority.

Eastern Idaho has seen record-breaking low temperatures since Sunday, and many school districts canceled classes due to the bone-chilling weather.

In Idaho Falls Monday, some of the coldest temperatures overnight were recorded at -30 degrees. It was the coldest temperature since 2009 and set a new record low temperature for Jan. 30.

Frum explained mail delivery service can be delayed or curtailed whenever weather, streets or walkways present hazardous conditions to carriers or vehicles. She said the Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration and only as a last resort.

“As deliveries return to normal, we’d also like to remind customers once they are able, and it is safe to do so, to please make sure their curbside mailboxes are clear of obstructions such as snow and ice,” Frum said. “And, for safety reasons, we also ask for customers to clear a path to their mailboxes/door slots on the house.”
