MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people are dead after their car was hit by a train Wednesday in North Memphis.

According to Memphis police, after midnight, officers responded to a crash at Chelsea and Carpenter. A car had been struck by a train. The two people in the vehicle were pronounced deceased on the scene, police say.

WREG went to the scene and discovered a lot of debris from the accident. Car pieces, personal information and three different shoes were found spread out over the area, which was the size of a football field.

The cold and icy conditions made it difficult for first responders, as the medical equipment left behind showed their efforts to save lives.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
