12-year-old hospitalized after injury in PE class at Guillen Middle School

EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) — "He couldn’t move his hands, his legs, his vision. Couldn’t see, talk, nothing," Sarai Mendoza said about her son who fell unconscious at Guillen Middle School in El Segundo Barrio Tuesday.

Brandon Mendoza, 12, was taken to University Medical Center and then admitted to El Paso Children's Hospital after he was injured during a physical education class.

The El Paso Independent School District released a statement Tuesday that indicated the teen was injured by accident.

"El Paso ISD confirms that a Guillen Middle School student was injured as a result of an accident during a physical education class this afternoon. Campus staff quickly attended to the student and contacted emergency medical personnel as well as the student’s guardian. The student was transported to a local hospital. We have no further information at this time. The safety and security of our students and staff is our highest priority." the statement read Tuesday.

Mendoza said as soon as she found out her son was hurt she went into shock.

"I was just thinking of my son praying to God that he was okay," she said.

Mendoza said her son is able to recall pieces of what happened.

He’s barely starting to talk," she said. "He just said that the game was over and that a kid came and just hit him.

Doctors will be looking at Brandon's spine while he remains hospitalized, Sarai added.

Meantime, Sarai and her family are pushing for answers from EPISD.

"I haven’t received no call from the district," she said. "Answers, we want answers. We want for them to investigate more [about] what happened."

Sarai said her son aspires to be a paramedic in the Army and that he enjoys history, art, playing basketball and playing the violin.

On Wednesday, EPISD said school leaders had contacted boy's family.

El Paso ISD is aware of an unfortunate accident that occurred during a physical education class on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at Guillen Middle School. Campus leadership has been in contact with the family and continues to be concerned about the well-being of our student. The campus community wishes the student a speedy recovery and looks forward to his safe return to the campus.
