Maxie's Restaurant & Lounge specializes in burgers served with fries and onion rings.

One of the oldest restaurants in West Des Moines was on the brink of closure, but a new owner has swooped in to keep its classic supper club vibe alive.

Maxie's Restaurant and Lounge located at 1311 Grand Ave. in West Des Moines has been serving its specialty onion rings and half-pound "Maxieburger" since 1967.

The restaurant planned to close its doors on Feb. 18 until a new owner came in at the last minute to keep it running.

"Maxie’s is in the process of changing ownership at the end of the month," the restaurant wrote on Facebook. "The new group plans to continue to operate in the current form with the current staff you know. We look forward to continuing to serve you!"

Axios previously reported that a potential investor expressed interest in buying the restaurant in early January, just as its real estate listing expired. The restaurant's current owner, Andy Mayfield, put it on the market while suffering from "a health issue," Axios reported.

On Tuesday, the restaurant wrote on Facebook that a new owner will be taking over in February.

Maxie’s is known for its casual menu of giant hamburgers, spinach and artichoke dip served with crispy pita points, and onions rings. The namesake "Maxieburger" features a half-pound patty adorned with lettuce, tomato, a slice of onion and a dill pickle, while the rarebit burger is served open faced and smothered in a cheese sauce. The restaurant also serves the Maxie Special, a 7-ounce top sirloin served with two breaded shrimp.
