Wamps Unveil Trash Pickup Program

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp and District Attorney Coty Wamp came together to announce a new initiative to help clean up Hamilton County roads.

The Wamps along with County Commissioner Jeff Eversole held a press conference this afternoon to announce that they plan to double the amount of community service assignments and miles of trash picked up across the county.

They said that it would be a way to relieve overcrowding at the Hamilton County Jail for minor, non-violent offenses, while helping to clean area roads up.

Coty Wamp says, “Instead of going to jail, or instead of spending your time not working, not doing anything while you’re waiting on your case to be resolved. We’re going to ask you to be productive and show us that you are sorry for the mistake that you made, for the offense that you committed, and then come back to court and show us that you’ve done your public workdays, you’ve picked up the trash, and we’re going to give you a break.”

This is funded through a state grant that Mayor Wamp says will make the county for the more trash that’s picked up.

This program will only apply to adult offenders in general sessions court and not juveniles.

The Wamps said they plan to collaborate on more programs in the future.
