Leon County celebrates Black History Month with upcoming events, resources

LEON COUNTY, FLa. — In celebration of Black History Month, Leon County Government is set to hold several events and offer resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System.

The events consist of movie screenings, story times, a genealogy event and an African American Read-In. The County is encouraging local community members to attend its upcoming events:

  • Preschool Story Time - Held for children ages three to six, featuring songs, rhymes, and stories focused on Black History Month. For dates, times, and locations, clickhere.
  • Black History Month Double Feature - Saturday, Feb. 11 at downtown Main Library, beginning at 11 a.m. There will be a movie double feature of the 2016 BAFTA Award-winning documentary I Am Not Your Negro (Rated PG-13) beginning at 11:30 a.m., followed by the 2016 Academy Award-winning film Moonlight (Rated R) at 1:30 p.m., which was directed by FSU film school alum Barry Jenkins. Light refreshments will be provided.
  • African American Genealogy 101 - Saturday, Feb.11 at Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library, beginning at 1 p.m. Researcher Dr. Juanita Gaston will be in attendance to teach individuals how to explore their family tree, diving deep into birth, death and marriage records. It is advised to bring a laptop or check out a library laptop. To register, click here.
  • Family Story Time - Saturday, Feb. 18 at Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library, beginning at 11 a.m. Families will be able to enjoy rhymes, songs and stories in honor and celebration of Black History Month. It is held for caregivers and children of ages five and younger, but all ages are welcomed.
  • African American Read-In - Saturday, Feb. 25 at downtown Main Library, beginning at 1 p.m. Local speakers will read aloud children's stories by African American authors. Light refreshments will be provided. Those speakers include:
    • Wanda Hunter, Leon County Government Assistant County Administrator
    • Dr. Kendra Mitchell, Assistant Professor at Florida A&M University in the Department of English and Modern Languages
    • Dougla-Khan Stancil, Coordinator of Clinical Programs at Florida A&M University
    • Joseph Ward, Neighborhood Medical Center Outreach Specialist/Health Educator
    • Regina Browning, Leon County Schools Adult & Community Education Assistant Director
