Montana, known for its scenic beauty and friendly communities, has also been home to some notorious serial killers. Here are a few of the most well-known that have some ties with the state:

Wayne Nance, AKA the “Missoula Mauler,” is responsible for six or more murders in Missoula, Montana between the years of 1974 and 1986. Having been fatally shot during a home invasion, Nance was never formally convicted of his crimes.

Gary Ridgway, also known as the “Green River Killer,” was active in Washington state and sentenced in 2003 to multiple life sentences in prison for the murder of 49 women.

Bobby Jack Fowler, who is believed to have murdered at least 14 girls and women, mostly in the Pacific Northwest, between 1970 and 1990. He died in 2006 while in prison in Oregon for unrelated charges.

David Meirhofer was responsible for four murders in rural Montana from 1967-1974. Three of Meirhofer’s victims were children. Shortly after confessing his heinous crimes, David Meirhofer hanged himself in his jail cell, never seeing the courtroom.

These infamous serial killers have left a lasting impact on the communities they affected and on the families of their victims. While they represent a small fraction of the total population, they serve as a reminder of the evil that can exist in our world and the importance of vigilance in keeping our communities safe.

The actions of these and other serial killers have also sparked reforms in the criminal justice system. For example, the creation of the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP), which collects and analyzes information on violent crimes, was a direct response to the increasing number of serial killings in the 1970s and 1980s.

Additionally, the advent of DNA technology has provided law enforcement with a powerful tool in solving cold cases and bringing killers to justice. DNA evidence was crucial in solving the cases of Ridgway, Fowler, and many others. Despite the progress made in the fight against serial killers, they remain a persistent threat. It is important for communities to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. Citizens can also take steps to protect themselves, such as being aware of their surroundings and avoiding risky situations.
