West Virginia high school athletes would no longer have to sit out a year before participating when transferring to another school under a bill passed Wednesday by the state Senate.

Senators approved Senate Bill 262 that would modify the current West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission transfer rule, according to the state Legislature’s website.

The bill would allow at least one transfer of schools. Some exceptions would be made for multiple transfers, including transferring back to a student’s home district, and allowing the Secondary School Activities Commission to weigh students’ specific circumstances.

It now goes to the House of Delegates for consideration. Last year, a similar bill passed the Senate but failed in the House.

The Senate’s bill calls for the change in the rule to go into effect in the 2023-2024 school year.
