LARGO, Fla. — Getting schools back open is a top priority in Lee County, where Hurricane Ian made landfall last week.

And what better team of people to help than Pinellas County Schools, which put together teams of craftsmen prepared to handle these kinds of operations.

A caravan of 20 skilled professionals from Pinellas Schools headed to Lee County Thursday morning to lend helping hands. They specialize in electrical work, plumbing, air conditioning, roofing and carpentry.

They will be working to repair elementary schools in Lee County with moderate damage, that have a chance of reopening soon.

The caravan is made up of nine utility vehicles, and several work trucks to aid in recovery.

About 1,200 grab and go meals are also heading to Lee County from Pinellas to hand out to families in need. 

The teams today will be working fast as they plan to return back from Fort Myers tonight.
