There are heavy hearts Wednesday in one small community.

Friends, families, teammates and even rival players took time to pay tribute to a high school football player in Sequatchie County who was killed in a crash last week along with his girlfriend.

18-year-old Austin Mofitt and his girlfriend, 19-year-old Alexis McCann, both of Dunlap, were killed last Thursday night when Moffitt ran a red light and collided with a commercial vehicle on Highway 28 near John Burch Road, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

"You could tell they just loved each other," says Austin's cousin, Hannah Daffron.

McCann's funeral was on Tuesday.

Austin’s aunt told us, “Austin and Alexis were inseparable. Their moms said they should be planning for a wedding not a funeral.”

"It's crazy," says Austin's brother Caleb Moffitt, "He was loved by so many people and it makes us feel better because he was such a good guy."

McCann's obituary says she was a "2021 graduate of Sequatchie County High School and was attending Chattanooga State working to receive a degree in nursing. Alexis worked at NHC Healthcare in Dunlap. She enjoyed hunting and fishing with her boyfriend Austin... She was also a Tennessee Vols fan."

It also says she enjoyed hunting and fishing with Austin.

The families say they did everything together.

While Austin loved Alexis, he also had another love: football.

Caleb says he was a leader on and off the field and that Austin's kindness spread throughout the community.
