No indictment in 2021 police shooting after Outer Belt chase

COLUMBUS – A Franklin County grand jury has declined to indict a Columbus police officer or a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy in the shooting death of a man during a shootout with police following a pursuit on I-270 in 2021.

On March 5, 2021, Andrew Teague refused to comply with efforts by law enforcement to arrest him on outstanding felony warrants and eventually led authorities on a chase on I-270 on the Southeast Side, where he conducted a U-turn and drove southbound in the northbound lanes for several minutes at high speeds, striking several vehicles, before his vehicle came to rest in the area of Big Walnut Creek, police and prosecutors said.

Teague, 43, climbed out of the driver’s side window holding a firearm and fired multiple shots toward law enforcement officers before Columbus Division of Police Officer John Kifer and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Michael Severance returned fire, killing Teague, according to the office of Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Gary Tyack.

No members of law enforcement were injured in the incident.
