In a state with the 2nd highest property taxes in the country, some are concerned that mandates in the SAFE-T Act will force tax hikes around Illinois. Kane County is discussing its first property tax hike in a decade to fill a deficit created by unfunded mandated reforms in the SAFE-T Act. During a news conference Wednesday, state representative Keith Wheeler said changes have to be made to the law.
Among other mandates, police departments are required to use body cameras by 2025. State representative Chris Bos said the SAFE-T Act is burdensome for downstate police departments.
Bos said another added cost comes when legal and judiciary staffing will have to be increased because of the elimination of cash bail.
