Going down the aisle at the grocery store, homeowners are faced with a daunting decision. What candy do trick-or-treaters really want?

A survey by Candy Store has helped shed some light on the most popular – and least popular – candy in Connecticut and around the country.

The most popular candy in the state is Almond Joy followed by Milky Way and then M&Ms. Other favorites around the country include Reese’s Cups, Skittles, Starburst, Hot Tamales, Sour Patch Kids, Hershey Kisses, Snickers and Tootsie Roll Pops.

There are some ways to make your house talk of the school, but not in a good way. There are a few different candies that children don’t want to see in their bag when they return home that night.

According to the survey, those include Circus Peanuts, Peanut Butter Kisses, Necco Wafers, Wax Cola Bottles, Smarties, Mary Janes, Tootsie Rolls, Licorice and Good & Plenty.

One of the most controversial candies around is candy corn. Candy corn appeared on both sides of the lists from favorites to the least popular. This sweet treat that is iconic for Halloween is loved and hated by many. It’s a very personal preference.

Other tips for handing out candy on Halloween include making sure you have an outside light on, a safe walkway for children to go up to your door to and also considering handing out non-candy treats.

The Teal Pumpkin Project encourages non-food trinkets and toys for food allergies. The project tells homeowners to place a teal pumpkin on their steps so trick-or-treaters know they are an allergy safe house. Ideas for these trinkets include glow sticks, pencils, erasers, bouncy balls, kazoos, spider rings, stickers, notepads, bookmarks and vampire fangs.
