Royals fire Matheny after another missed trip to the playoffs

KMIZ

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Kansas City Royals fired manager Mike Matheny and pitching coach Cal Eldred in an announcement on Twitter Wednesday night.

This comes after the Royals finished the season 65-97 after Wednesday's 9-2 loss in Cleveland.

Matheny just completed his third season in charge with the Royals with an overall 165-219 record (.430 winning percentage) during that time, with his worst season coming this year.

The Royals also recently fired longtime executive Dayton Moore, ending his 16-year stint with the franchise and signaling the start of a new era.

Another front-office mainstay, J.J. Piccolo, has since been elevated to the top job.
