Local STEM school working to make Balloon Fiesta Park a little greener
Concession row at Balloon Fiesta Park is filled with a lot of delicious food and drinks, but all those treats lead to a lot of trash.
For all nine days of the event, Albuquerque Institute for Mathematics and Science students are going to school by day and recycling by night and even some mornings too.
"We basically go to all of the recycle bins, switch out the recycle bag, clean up their bins, make sure everything is tidy for people to recycle and then we just throw those away," said Alesandra Ustillos, a senior at AIMS.
Her classmate, Selia Lozoya added, "It's a great way to help your community and something that is very widely recognized by the entire state and the city."
Albuquerque Institute for Mathematics and Science has partnered with Albuquerque Solid Waste for more than a decade.
"The students are amazing," said Solid Waste Director Matthew Whale. "We're so glad that they're dedicated to their community and not only their community, but just growing in everything they do."
The high-schoolers participate in Model United Nations, otherwise known as Model UN where they learn how the UN operates.
Solid Waste gives them a grant in exchange for their clean-up work. This allows them to offset the cost of two annual conferences, the New Mexico Model United Nations conference and the YMCA New Mexico Youth and Government conference.
"It's expensive to go on those conferences," said William Lechm, a senior at AIMS. "It's nice to help the community on the one hand and it's also nice to pay less."
So remember, next time you're at Balloon Fiesta Park, think of these hardworking high school students doing their part to keep Albuquerque beautiful.
