San Angelo police officer arrested, charged with theft

A San Angelo police officer has been arrested and charged with shoplifting at a Walmart, according to a San Angelo Police Department news release.

At about 6 p.m. Tuesday, SAPD officers were dispatched to Walmart, 5501 Sherwood Way, for a shoplifter, the release stated.

"Upon officers’ arrival they were able to locate the suspect in the parking lot," the release said. "The suspect was detained and an investigation was conducted."

At the conclusion of the investigation the suspect, identified as Jayson Zapata, was arrested and transported to Tom Green County Detention Center, the release said.

Zapata has been employed as an SAPD officer since 2007.

"Zapata will be on administrative leave from the department while the SAPD Internal Affairs Division conducts an investigation," the release stated. "Zapata was off duty when the incident occurred."

According to jail records, Zapata was charged with theft of property $100-$750. He was released on a $500 bond.
