-- PUT ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE AS AN INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. A HOMICIDE VICTIM KILLED IN 2004, HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED. SACRAMENTO COUNTY DEPUTIES SAY THE WOMAN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS SHANNON VIELGUTH. INVESTIGATORS SAY HER IDENTITY WAS CONFIRMED WITH THE DNA OF A CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER. THE WOMAN WAS MOST LIKELY KILLED IN 2004, THOUGH HER REMAINS WEREN’T FOUND UNTIL 2008 IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. DNA genealogy technology has identified the remains of a woman 18 years after she was killed in Sacramento County, authorities said. Now, authorities are asking for help to identify her killer. Shannon Vielguth's remains were found in March 2008 in the area of Tyler Island and the Georgianna Slough near Isleton, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said in a release on Tuesday. After days of processing the scene and exhuming the remains from the site in Sacramento County, the coroner said she was most likely killed in the fall of 2004."Over the past 13 years, sheriff's investigators and the coroner's office have worked to identify the victim. The investigation included reviewing hundreds of Missing Persons reports, providing the media with photographs of clothing and jewelry found with the remains as well as a composite drawing of what the victim may have looked like," the sheriff's office said.Investigators launched a genetic genealogy investigation last year. Vielguth's identity was confirmed with the DNA of a close family member. Vielguth was unhoused at the time of her death, according to authorities. She also went by several last names and lived in several states leading up to 2004. "Based on law enforcement records, Vielguth was most likely in Reno, NV and Sacramento in October of 2004 which coincides with the time she was most likely killed," the sheriff's office said.Authorities are now searching for the person who killed her.
