MADISON (WLUK) -- A trend reversal in COVID-19 cases continues in Wisconsin, as state health officials are reporting the most new cases in nearly two weeks.

The state Department of Health Services reported 1,172 new cases on Tuesday, the most since Sept. 21. The seven-day average of new cases rose to 874, its highest level in a week. The trend continues an October uptick after new cases fell during the second half of September.

Seven-day average test positivity was at 9.1%.

Five new deaths were reported Tuesday, with the seven-day average remaining at two.

Since the pandemic began, Wisconsin has reported nearly 1.65 million total cases and 13,513 deaths.

The weekly vaccination update showed 65.5% of state residents having received at least one dose of vaccine, 61.7% having completed the initial vaccine series and 35.9% having received an additional or booster dose.

Hospitalizations changed little on Tuesday, the most recent date for which numbers are available.

The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported treating 412 COVID-19 patients, one fewer than on Monday and nine fewer than a week earlier. Of those, 48 were in intensive care, down three in a day and seven over a week.

Northeast region hospitals had 40 COVID-19 patients, down two in a day and four over a week. Five of those were in ICUs, one more than on Monday but three fewer than a week earlier. In the Fox Valley region, there were 17 COVID-19 patients, up one in a day and five over a week. One of those was in an ICU, the same as a day and a week earlier.
