An El Paso man was seriously injured in a high-speed collision that smashed his car and knocked the rear axle off a semitruck-trailer Tuesday evening on Walter Jones Boulevard next to Fort Bliss, police said.

Eddie Duran, 19, of Central El Paso, was driving a 2015 Kia Cardenza at a high speed heading east in the 100 block of Walter Jones Boulevard near Global Reach Drive, police said.

Soon after 6 p.m., Duran lost control of his car, veered to the right and hit a curb before the Kia crossed into the westbound lanes of Walter Jones and collided with the trailer, a police news release stated.

Video aired by Channel 7-KVIA showed the wrecked car and the last axle on the ground, away from the trailer, whose rear was touching the street.

Duran was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. The truck driver was identified as Daniel Campos, 29, of East El Paso. There were no other injuries reported by police.

An investigation by the police Special Traffic Investigations Unit found speed was a factor in the collision.
