FLU SEASON IS HERE. AND HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE WORRIED WE COULD SEE A SURGE IN CASES, AS MASKING AND OTHER COVID PRECAUTIONS END. THE MILWAUKEE HEALTH DEPARTMENT IS HOSTING A FLU VACCINE CLINIC RIGHT NOW AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE OF MILWAUKEE. MILWAUKEE HEALTH DIRECTOR KIRSTEN JOHNSON SAYS ONLY 38% OF MILWAUKEE RESIDENTS RECEIVED THE VACCINE LAST YEAR, THE BEST WAY TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST FLU IS TO GET VACCINATED. VACCINATION CAN MAKE THE ILLNESS LESS SEVERE. VACCINATIONS AGAINST FLU DECREASE THE FLU BY 40-60%. THE CITY IS GIVING OUT FREE FLU SHOTS TODAY AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE OF MILWAUKEE UNTIL 1. ALL MILWAUKEE RESIDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE. AND WAUKESHA IS GIVING FREE FLU SHOTS AND HEALTH SCREENINGS TO ADULTS AND CHILDREN AT A COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR TODAY. THE EVENT RUNS FROM 2:30 UNTIL 6:30 TONIGHT AT LA CASA DE ESPERANZA ON ARCADIAN AVENUE. IT’S ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE HEALTH RESOURCES TO THE CITY’S HISPANIC COMMUNITY. Mayor Cavalier Johnson and city of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson attended a Flu Season Awareness kickoff at the Neighborhood House of Milwaukee to receive their flu shot and raise awareness of the upcoming flu season."While for some people the flu may be an inconvenience, but for some other folks in our immediate circles, in our neighborhood and our city generally, it could be deadly," Johnson said.The Milwaukee Health Department is offering free flu shots, COVID-19 vaccines and COVID-19 booster shots without an appointment or proof of insurance at their Northwest Health Center, Southside Health Center and the Menomonee Valley Drive-Thru Clinic."Make it a one-stop shop to boost your immunity against both viruses this year," said Johnson said. The flu vaccine is recommended for all residents over 6 months old, especially adults of 65 years and older, pregnant women and children under the age of five.Dozens of Milwaukee residents were already lined up through Neighborhood House, ready to roll up their sleeves and receive a flu shot. Recent studies show, being vaccinated against the flu reduces risks by 40-60% among the overall population, according to Johnson.
