Mayor Cavalier Johnson and city of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson attended a Flu Season Awareness kickoff at the Neighborhood House of Milwaukee to receive their flu shot and raise awareness of the upcoming flu season.
"While for some people the flu may be an inconvenience, but for some other folks in our immediate circles, in our neighborhood and our city generally, it could be deadly," Johnson said.
The Milwaukee Health Department is offering free flu shots, COVID-19 vaccines and COVID-19 booster shots without an appointment or proof of insurance at their Northwest Health Center, Southside Health Center and the Menomonee Valley Drive-Thru Clinic.
"Make it a one-stop shop to boost your immunity against both viruses this year," said Johnson said.
The flu vaccine is recommended for all residents over 6 months old, especially adults of 65 years and older, pregnant women and children under the age of five.
Dozens of Milwaukee residents were already lined up through Neighborhood House, ready to roll up their sleeves and receive a flu shot.
Recent studies show, being vaccinated against the flu reduces risks by 40-60% among the overall population, according to Johnson.
