Man sentenced for threatening minor with knife and trying to run him over

IDAHO FALLS — A man will serve a rider after threatening a minor with a knife and then trying to run him over with a car.

District Judge Dane Watkins sentenced Casey James Hurt, 20, to serve 2-5 years in prison after being convicted of felony aggravated assault. Watkins retained jurisdiction in the case, meaning Hurt will complete a rider treatment program. Once the program is finished, the judge can decide to send Hurt back to prison or release him on probation.

Hurt was charged in February with two felonies for aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors also charged him with an enhancement for use of a deadly weapon in commission of a felony.

Hurt accepted a plea agreement and in exchange for pleading guilty to felony aggravated assault, the prosecution dropped the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge and the enhancement.

Idaho Falls Police were called to a disturbance involving weapons in January near 14th Street.

Witnesses said Hurt got into an argument with two people, including two minors, at a residence after another person was not allowed in.

Three other people came out of the residence and saw Hurt with a shovel in his hands while arguing, according to court documents.

“If you’re a man, put the damn shovel down,” one of the minors reportedly said to Hurt as he took the shovel away.

As the minor was putting the shovel away, Hurt told him, “After I’m done with you, I’m going after (another minor).”

Hurt then went to his car to retrieve a “blue knife” which he flipped open. A third man got between Hurt and the minor and told Hurt to leave.

According to police reports, Hurt left and was traveling at “high rates of speed” down the road.

He came back to the residence, swerving the vehicle, and almost hit the minor, court documents say.

Hurt then hit other vehicles in the area and told the victim he was sorry for hitting his vehicle.

According to documents, Hurt got out of the vehicle and went inside the residence.

Idaho Falls Police arrived and residents told police that Hurt possibly had a firearm on him and could be in the basement.

“Due to these circumstances, it would not be safe for the members of the residence to return if there was a possible threat,” documents said.

In the end, Hurt was not found inside the residence.
