Schools moved to ‘secured’ status last week

Elementary schools, Brown County Middle School and Brown County High School were all moved to a “secured facility” status last week due to a security concern brought forward by local law enforcement.

No direct threats were made to the schools, according Brown County Schools Superintendent Emily Tracy.

The schools entered the status the morning of Sept. 29, and resumed normal operation within a few hours.

Tracy sent out the following message via ParentSquare about the schools’ status: “No threats were made against our schools and this decision was for precautionary enhanced security across the district,” the ParentSquare message said.

Brown County Sheriff Scott Southerland said on Sept. 30 that the sheriff’s office received information about what could be “loosely defined” as a threat.

“Out of an abundance of caution we notified administrative staff at the school while we investigated,” Southerland said.

“We quickly determined the tip — which came from another agency — was unfounded.”

No arrests were made.

“We believe in protecting the safety of all of our students and feel that a secured facility status was the best decision at that time,” Tracy said.

“This status means that students are not in a lockdown status; however, we keep students inside all buildings and halls are monitored closely.”
