Cold and flu season is upon us and it’s expected to be a harsh year with COVID continuing to be a concern.

Dr. Jay Varma, director of Cornell’s Center for Pandemic Prevention and Response, joins “News All Day” to tell us how to prepare for this season. Previously, he was a senior adviser for public health under former Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Dr. Varma says that the reason this season will be tougher is because people are not wearing masks as frequently as they used to. He advises people to both wear a mask and get the flu vaccine.

He also encourages people to get the COVID booster.

In response to those who are reticent to get the first or second booster, including those who have had COVID, Varma explains that this virus is wily and changes every few months. The updated vaccines include protection against the new Omicron variant.

While Varma acknowledges the vaccines are not perfect, he says they still do a good job of reducing the risk of getting infected or transmitting the virus.
