WEST HAVEN, CT — West Haven is known for having some of the best pizza around, so when a competition pits the locals against each other, it's a rare "war" where everybody wins.

The West Haven Italian American Civic Association’s Women's Auxiliary has announced that the city’s popular “Pizza Wars” is back.

This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Cielo Banquet Hall at 85 Chase Lane in West Haven.

“We have six participating pizzerias, including previous winners; Lorenzo’s Ristorante, Zuppardi’s Apizza & and Mike’s Apizza and Restaurant,” organizers wrote in a news release. “We are also excited to have Tom and Pat’s, Cappetta’s Italian Imports, and Full Circle Pizza return this year.”

There are two categories, The People’s Choice and West Haven’s Best. West Haven’s Best is a blind tasting by a panel of experienced culinary judges. The People’s Choice is voted on by the public.

“We are very excited to be opening Italian Heritage Month with this event,” the news release states. “We also will be featuring a small Italian art and history display created by amazing students from Aces Academy.

“This year the Women’s Auxiliary chose to support a local charity near and dear to the family of one of our participating pizzerias, Cappetta’s. ‘My Angel Foundation CT.’ This foundation was inspired by a courageous young boy, Aniello Cappetta who throughout his 3-year battle with Osteosarcoma demonstrated a strong spirit and fight as cancer’s greatest opponent. The commitment to My Angel Foundation CT is to assist families during this difficult time preserving the courage and spirit of the family.

“The West Haven Italian American Civic Association’s Ladies Auxiliary is looking forward to putting on this great event and hopes to get the support of the community. Please join us!”
