Cars lined Beach Church’s parking lot in Horry County at 9 a.m. Tuesday, for a food drive just days after Hurricane Ian made landfall in coastal South Carolina.

The church teamed up with Faith Outreach Ministries to offer food for neighbors in need because they say a lot of people lost power during Hurricane Ian and because of inflation and high costs, losing food hurts especially bad right now.

“The elderly and retired, a lot of them now are having to choose between food and medicine,” a volunteer said. “A lot of large families are coming through and they’re really struggling. You have four or five kids, you don’t know what the cost of that food is, this is a lifeline for them.”

Organizers said it was the largest show of volunteers they’ve ever seen.

John Perry, a volunteer who works close to Beach Church said whether or not someone volunteered or needed the help, the food drive makes the entire community better.

“People like seeing people helping other people. It makes them feel good, it makes us feel good. They’re happy that there are still people that are doing things like this, it’s just good for the whole community,” Perry said.

The church offered prayer to anyone who came through and invited everyone to their Sunday services.
