Los Angeles police were investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Koreatown late Monday night.
The shooting was reported near the intersection of 7th Street and New Hampshire Avenue around 11:30 p.m.
Arriving officers were initially unable to locate a victim, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Radtke said. The man was eventually found in a planter outside of an apartment building.
The victim, later identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as 32-year-old Latauriisha O’Brien, also known as rapper “Half Ounce,” was pronounced dead at the scene, Radtke said.
“You know, I heard like seven, eight shots back to back and I came out to my balcony to see what’s goin on, and then I saw, like, three people running really fast around the corner,” Omid Saadatkhah told KTLA.
Police and family members said the 32-year-old was walking home with a friend when someone in a dark SUV pulled up and started shooting. The rapper’s friend reportedly got away.
“A single male suspect, only described as a male, Black, dark clothing, apparently did the shooting and then got into a dark SUV and left southbound from the location,” Lt. Radtke said.
Half Ounce is the third rapper shot on the streets of L.A. County in less than a month.
PnB Rock was shot to death in South L.A. on Sept. 12. and Kee Riches in Compton on Sept. 24.
Half Ounce’s mother told KTLA that her son got his start in rap when he was just 9-years old and that he leaves behind three children and a pregnant wife.
In addition to being a rap artist, his mother said he was working at UPS and attending UEI College where he was studying heating and air conditioning so that he could open up his own business.
A GoFundMe has been set up for Half Ounce’s family.
