Everybody has to eat. But for many college students, some will sacrifice buying more food to make their dollar stretch.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of groceries increased by 13 percent in 2022.

On average, college students in Texas will spend $1700 a semester on groceries.

Because of inflation and higher grocery bills, some students say they try to find ways to eat for less.

"So last year when I was in a house, and I had no meal plan, I was spending anywhere from about $80 to maybe $110 a week on groceries," said ACU student Samuel Carter.

And some students said they’re cutting items out of their grocery budget to save money or buying food in bulk.

"Frozen chicken. Frozen pizzas. I eat a lot of ramen," said ACU student Ainsley Mullins. "Yesterday I spent over $100 bucks. [I went to] Walmart."

Mullins friend Gianna Russo said she's has cut certain items from her grocery bill to help save money.

"When my parents are in town, I spend about $20. And when they aren’t in town, I usually spend about $100," she said. "Usually, I will buy more coffee. Cereal. Granola bars. Just like the main stuff I need when I’m by myself."
