Officer Bervin Smith announced upcoming community events, including National Night Out and this month’s movie night in Lake Highlands.

First, let’s talk crime.

There’s been an uptick of property crimes, particularly near the White Rock Lake area in parking lots. Thefts are occurring in cars and suspects tend to pick the door rather than break the window.

The officers suggest locking your car doors and calling police if you see someone suspicious. The response time to a call will be quicker if the description of a suspicious person is more detailed, as in what the person looks like and what they’re wearing.

“Lock your car” signs should be posted in the lots of shopping centers and leasing offices. If you don’t see one posted, let those stores or offices know.

Serial numbers on any items that might be stolen— including TVs, computers, phones and other items— should be kept handy in case something needs to be reported missing. Officers suggest you take a picture of those serial numbers so it’s easy to access.

They also strongly recommend keeping porch lights on at night and emphasized locking car doors at home.

Senior Corporal Mundel Spence reported there has been aa decrease in burglaries and more police presence in high crime areas. Porch pirates continue to be an issue but tend to be repeat offenders who police are looking for.

Their end takeaway was BOLO— Be On the Look Out.
