Public invited to line procession route for Austin police officer being interred in Abilene

An Austin police officer killed in a motorcycle crash after completing his work shift will be interred Tuesday in Abilene with military honors.

Internment for senior officer Anthony "Tony" Martin, 54, who also was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base while serving in the U.S. Air Force, will begin at 1 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 W. Lake Road, the Abilene Police Department said in a news release.

The public is invited to line the procession route, which begins at noon in the 1700 block of E. South 11th Street near Expo Drive at the Taylor County Expo Center.

Before dawn on the morning of Sept. 23, Martin was driving home following a night shift when his motorcycle was involved in a crash with a sedan in Liberty Hill at the Intersection of State Highway 29 and RM 1869 in Williamson County. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prior to joining the Austin PD in 2006, Martin served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He "was a member of the Abilene and Dyess community for many years," the release said.

Martin is survived by his parents, wife, three children and one granddaughter.

  • Begin in the 1700 block of E. South 11th Street near Expo Drive
  • Continue west on E. South 11th Street towards S. Judge Ely Boulevard
  • Turn right on S. Judge Ely Boulevard and continue north
  • Turn left on E. Ambler Avenue and continue west
  • Turn right on W. Lake Road and continue north
  • Enter Texas State Veterans Cemetery at 7457 W. Lake Road
