Twitter Reaction To Pitt’s 45-24 Win Over Rhode Island

Published

on

Pitt knew they were going to defeat Rhode Island; it was just up to them on how they wanted to execute the gameplan.

A lot like last week against Western Michigan, Frank Cignetti’s wanted to emphasize his star running back and that worked out pretty well as Izzy Abanikanda carried the ball 19 times for a career-high 177 yards (9.3 yds/carry) and scored a career-high 4 touchdown as Pitt defeated the Rams 45-24.

Quarterback Kedon Slovis returned to action and completed 20 of 27 yards for 189 yards. Until the last drive of the game, Slovis was pretty much asked to throw everything underneath, with a heavy emphasis on the wide receiver screens.

The Pitt defense wasn’t as sharp as you would expect, having a number of blown assignments that allowed Rhode Island to drive the ball up the field. Although, it should be pointed out that Pitt played a number of second and third team players for the entire game.

All in all, Pitt runs its record to 3-1 with the ACC conference portion of their schedule starting next Saturday at home against Georgia Tech.

Rhode Island played a spirited game. Give ‘em credit and exposed the defense to weakness on that Run Pass Option, RPO. It’s better to win by 21 and see a weakness than lose. H2P.

Thought the ref crew was from the CAA but discovered it was an ACC crew. Stink, stank, stunk.
Devonshire was called for pass interference when the receiver pushed off. Ref was in the wrong position to make the call but that didn’t stop him from throwing the flag. This makes two games where Pitt had to play the team and the refs, Tennessee being the other.
