Pickup driver charged with DUI in Chesterfield crash that killed passenger

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — The driver of a pickup truck has been charged with drunk driving in the Chesterfield crash that killed his passenger.

The wreck happened in the 5800 block of Chesterwood Drive around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Lt. George L. Turner with Chesterfield Police.

"The driver of a 2004 Ford 150 was driving on Chesterwood Drive when they lost control of the vehicle," Turner said.

Officers said that pickup then hit a drainage ditch before rolling over.

The driver and passenger were transported to an area hospital.

The passenger, who was critically injured, died of his injuries Sunday morning, officers said.

"The victim’s information is being withheld pending notification of next of kin," police said.

The driver, Franklin Chicas-Chavarria of Richmond, had non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Chicas-Chavarria was charged with DUI maiming, reckless driving, and having an open container of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle. However, police said additional charges were pending.

Officers said Chicas-Chavarria was being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail.
