Oklahoma City Animal Welfare is waiving adoption fees for dogs and cats from May 20th through the 22nd in celebration of the Best Friends National Adoption Weekend.

This weekend is coming at the perfect time this year, as the shelter continues to deal with overpopulation issues.

According to Animal Welfare, the shelter is currently at 146% capacity for dogs, but they are helpful that this weekend will change that.

"We have been well over 100% capacity, in the 130s, 140s, even up over 150% capacity for quite some time and we're really hoping this weekend will help," said Animal Welfare Supervisor, Brienne Grayson.

The Animal Welfare is hopeful that this weekend will positively impact their current capacity issues, as they wave adoption fees for both dogs and cats through Sunday, May 22nd.

"We've had over 1,100 people in the building today, we are currently at about 65 adoptions, that's a rough estimate so hopefully as we speak we're getting more," said Grayson.

The Welfare has seen a great incline in dogs at the shelter for several months now,

"We were pretty packed all through this past winter, we're not exactly sure why, we kinda feel like it's a little bit of a weird post-covid era if this is just our new normal," Grayson said.

Plans for a new shelter for the welfare are currently in the works, and would also help with capacity issues,

"We are excited about the new shelter, hopefully, that's just a few years away, and that's gonna give us more space that we need, the more space, the more lives we can save," said Grayson.

For those who are unable to adopt, but would like to help, the Animal Welfare has other ways to get involved,

"If you can't really have an animal in your house right now, that's okay too cause we have plenty of them here, so you just come in here and be one of our volunteers, we need the help, and we will happily take the help," Grayson said.

Animal Welfare is optimistic that all of their furry friends, will find their forever families.

Animal Welfare is open daily from 12 pm to 5:30 pm.
