Racine Officer Under Investigation In Fatal Shooting: Officials

The subject of a search warrant fled a traffic stop, and after a chase, a Racine police officer shot the armed subject, according to police.

RACINE, WI β€” A Racine police officer shot and killed a person at the center of a search warrant Friday afternoon and is now under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, according to a news release from the agency.

The officer tried to stop a car to execute the search warrant for a felon in possession of a firearm around 1 p.m., when the person fled in the car. The brief pursuit continued when the person fled on foot, according to authorities.

At the end of the pursuit, the person was seen with a handgun, and the officer fired, hitting them. The person was taken to a local hospital, where they died, authorities said.

Police recovered a gun, and a body camera captured the shooting. The officer has been placed on administrative leave in line with Racine Police Department policy, according to the release.

The Wisconsin Crime Lab and Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting the Department of Justice in the investigation. Investigators will turn the results of the investigation over to the Racine County District Attorney's Office.
