A Seattle bakery profiled on food-travel writer Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” show is coming for Wisconsin. Piroshky Piroshky – which opened back in 1992 and has four locations in Washington state – specializes in Eastern European pastries called piroshky (hand-held pies).
To celebrate their three decades in business, they’ve been touring the States doing pre-order pop-ups in various cities. Including, Milwaukee. The pre-order is now until June 7 (cutoff at 11:30 a.m.), with pickup at Third Space Brewing (1515 W. St. Paul Ave.) on June 9 (4-6 p.m.). The minimum order is $50, and shipping is free. The pastries are baked and frozen and just need to be heated in the oven.
I will confess I’ve never eaten a piroshky (or pirozhki) – a stuffed, baked or fried bun made from yeast dough available as a street food in Russia. The Seattle bakery makes several kinds, with fillings like beef and cheese, chicken fajita, and chicken, curry and rice. Not eating meat? Your options include Impossible beef and onion, and potato and mushroom. You can also order soup (borscht) and sweet treats from the bakery: apricot turnovers, chocolate cream hazelnut rolls, cinnamon cardamom braids, rhubarb piroshky and marzipan rolls.
Perhaps you will learn why this food was named “The 20 Most Iconic Food Destinations Across America” by Smithsonian Magazine in 2013.
