DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) - Thunderstorm chances will be with us in the Miami Valley this week. It is important to know where your safe spot is in the event of severe weather!

First let's break down the difference between a watch and a warning.

When a watch is issued, we want you to be prepared! This means conditions are favorable for severe weather development.

When a warning is issued, this means to take action. Severe weather is present with a warning and people should head to their safe spot when they are in a warning polygon.

So where is your safe spot?

Basements are always the best option since it is below ground, but if you do not have a basement no worries.

The next best place would be to go to the lowest floor and into the center part of your home.

Make sure you are away from any windows and have blankets, pillows or a helmet to cover your head with.

Team Tornado 2022 continues for the month of May and your child can be a part of it! Have them get in their safe spot and snap a photo. Parents can then submit the photos on our Chime In page for a chance to see your child on air!
