With the weather warming up, and more people heading outside, law enforcement is warning the community about car burglaries. People out on hiking trails are often highly targeted.

Deputies encourage you to leave all valuables at home or take them with you on trails. While most incidents are petty thefts, there have been some organized crimes that specifically target parking areas in the past.

Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley says they are very efficient and they're very fast.

They don't necessarily have to smash the window to get into your vehicle, obviously, if you leave your car and lock you're making it very easy.

Law enforcement says some burglars don't actually take any items out of the cars.

Once they have that information they've got your card and so, you may not even realize that you are a victim until you look at your account.

Trail heads along major roadways and the Lake Tahoe rim are the most common targets, but they also occur in Casino parking garages in Stateline.

Authorities say if you do become a victim, that reporting it right away increases the likelihood of them recovering stolen property and limits further damage from stolen information.
