One man was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting shortly after first responders arrived.

Another man had been critically injured and was taken to an area hospital by ambulance, said Lt. David Ernst, a spokesperson for the Lawrence Police Department, but that man was later pronounced dead.

Police and first responders were dispatched to the parking lot of the store just after 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, scanner traffic indicated.

Ernst said that in addition to the two men who were killed, four other men were nearby at the scene “that we’re currently speaking to,” but he did not know their involvement at the time.

Ernst said the investigation was ongoing and he did not yet have other details to provide, but police do not believe there is an active threat to public safety.

Police ask anyone with information on this incident to call the department at 785-832-7509 or Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at 785-843-TIPS (8477). Tips to Crime Stoppers can be anonymous.

Police have not yet released the names of the men killed.

Tuesday’s shooting resulted in the second and third homicides in Lawrence within two days.

On Monday, 25-year-old Regan Gibbs was killed at the apartment where she lived with her husband. He was arrested at the scene and has been charged with first-degree murder.
